About Lilly's Home

Founder Sabrina Wägeli + Lilly

During my holiday in Hurghada in Egypt, I one day found a severely injured dog lying in the street. I couldn’t close my eyes and simply leave him to suffer or die. So I decided to take him to a veterinarian immediately – it was his last chance to survive.

The vet provided medical care, but his life depended on whether treatment could continue. From the very first moment, I fell in love with this little fighter. That’s why I made the decision to take responsibility for him and brought him into my care.

One month later, I had another fateful encounter: I found his sister. She was locked up, terribly emaciated, and full of fear. I will never forget that moment – the first touch, holding her in my arms and taking her back to my apartment. I said to her, “If you want, you can stay with us. If not, you are free now.”

She stayed. And from the second day on, she and her brother were inseparable. I named them Lilly and Honey. The three of us were incredibly happy together. But then came the day that changed everything. My beloved Lilly had eaten poisoned bait, and all help came too late. I lost my soul dog – a loss that still fills me with deep sadness even four years later.

Meeting Lilly changed me forever. Out of this loss, and out of the deep love I had for her, my mission was born: Lilly’s Home – a refuge for street dogs in Egypt. Every single day, I saw how much suffering these dogs endure: from hunger, violence, and the lack of medical care. I bought a piece of land and built a home where we can take in dogs, provide medical treatment, and care for them with love.

In addition, I rent a large farm where we are able to take in even more dogs. I also care for many street dogs outside the farm, feeding them regularly and providing medical treatment. By now, we are caring for more than one hundred dogs.

Of course, all dogs receive veterinary care and are neutered, to sustainably prevent further suffering.
I knew from the beginning that I could not save all dogs on my own. But the help I can give can change the life of a single dog forever.

Our work

Our goal is to provide dogs in and around our shelter in Hurghada with food, clean water, and a safe place to find refuge. In addition, we regularly travel to various locations outside our sanctuary to distribute food to street dogs we are unable to care for directly within our shelter.

Another important goal of our work is to neuter as many dogs as possible, in order to prevent the birth of more puppies who would otherwise be forced to live on the streets. Our organization covers the full cost of all veterinary treatments.

Sponsorships and donations are therefore essential for us to continue our work. Every donation and every form of support has the power to change a dog’s life for the better.

If you are interested in adopting one of our dogs, please feel free to contact us without obligation at info@lillyshome.ch
